Winners, News And Notes On August 3, 2021

Coming off a weekend where it was revealed top NXT star Adam Cole’s contract is set to expire this month, Cole did not appear on a pre-taped WWE NXT broadcast.

Instead, WWE NXT advertised a “Love Her or Lose Her” match pitting Dexter Lumis against Johnny Gargano as Lumis attempted to win Indi Hartwell’s heart. NXT also advertised Hit Row vs. IMPERIUM in tag team action, Bobby Fish vs. Roderick Strong and the next round of the NXT Breakout tournament in a first-round match between Trey Baxter and Joe Gacy.

Last week’s broadcast of WWE NXT garnered its lowest viewership since moving to the USA Network as NXT aired on SyFy due to preemption. The preemption was in favor of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

WWE NXT Results: Tuesday, August 3, 2021

Ashante Thee Adonis and Top Dolla def. Legado del Fantasma by DQ

Between these two teams, nobody seems to be able to win a match decisively, but I’m sure this is all building toward a showdown at NXT TakeOver 36.

Hopefully an eventual Hit Row victory means they will be in line for an NXT Tag Team Championship shot against MSK, and I think they should win.

Ridge Holland def. Ikemen Jiro

Ridge Holland’s entrance was very dark and unique, but did it have to be back-to-back with a Dexter Lumis segment?

Ridge Holland looks like the real deal. People forget the massive push he was in for prior to suffering a freak accident last year. As a top-tier NXT talent, he might be good enough to lose to Jeff Hardy one day.

I felt so bad that Ikemen Jiro was in this spot. NXT couldn’t have rounded up anybody else in 205 Live with less charisma?

Nobody is more entertaining in defeat than Ikemen Jiro.

Roderick Strong def. Bobby Fish

Roderick Strong’s promo from last week was the least-viewed NXT YouTube clip from the July 27 broadcast, and with no clear purpose for The Diamond Mine it’s not a surprise.

Roderick Strong is in desperate need of a title feud with KUSHIDA and he needs to win that title in order to give this middling act something.

The Grizzled Young Vets def. Cameron Grimes and LA Knight

Cameron Grimes and LA Knight continued to show promise as a strange bedfellow tag team, which WWE does better than anybody, right up until Knight predictably turned on him.

I wonder if Grimes will wrestle in a tuxedo through their blowoff match, presumably at NXT TakeOver 36.

I hope Ted DiBiase plays a part in Cameron Grimes regaining the WWE NXT Championship. Just think about the pop he would get if he even threw a well-executed right hand.

Trey Baxter def. Joe Gacy—WWE NXT Breakout Tournament

For all those fans with a persecution complex who moaned about NXT pushing bigger guys, big men were 2-2 in the first round of this tournament. Joe Gacy losing to Trey Baxter was another surprising outcome.

Duke Hudson seems to be emerging as the clear-cut favorite to win this thing.

Karrion Kross and Samoa Joe Face Off

Karrion Kross feels like the walking dead on this show, and this was taped before his most recent baffling loss to Keith Lee.

In something I thought I would never see in NXT, Karrion Kross literally ran away from Samoa Joe. It was more of a brisk jog, but he still ran.

Apparently, during the taping, fans were obstructing this segment with “Jeff Hardy” chants.

Johnny Gargano def. Dexter Lumis—Love Her or Lose Her Match

If Indi Hartwell and Dexter Lumis ended up making out and riding off into the sunset—which was entertaining—why not just let Lumis win the match and protect the stipulation? NXT really did a two-week build for a stipulation that was completely discarded, but I’m happy for InDex.

If it is the plan, InDex backstage segments could give the Cameron Grimes-LA Knight segments a run for their money.

This feels like it’s building toward Indi Hartwell and Dexter Lumis vs. Candice LeRae and Johnny Gargano.
