Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy put in another fantastic performance in his side’s narrow victory at Brentford on Saturday and there are now questions as to why he was not nominated for the Ballon d’Or award
There was another important victory for Chelsea on Saturday as they won at West London neighbours Brentford to stay on top of the Premier League.
Ben Chilwell’s goal before half-time was enough for the Blues to clinch a potentially important three points, but it was goalkeeper Edouard Mendy who was the star of the show.
The Senegalese shot-stopper put in a virtuoso performance to keep yet another clean sheet and prevent the Bees not only from grabbing a draw, but potentially more.
Mendy has been in sensational form for the club since joining from Rennes in the summer transfer window of 2020 and played a key role in last season’s Champions League success.

Indeed, Mendy kept five clean sheets – including in the final victory over Manchester City – to help Thomas Tuchel’s side lift the trophy, becoming the first ever African goalkeeper to do so.
Mendy did not do enough to merit a place on the 30-man Ballon d’Or shortlist which was announced earlier this month.
His Chelsea teammates from last campaign Cesar Azpilicueta, N’Golo Kante, Jorginho and Mason Mount were all on the list, alongside summer signing Romelu Lukaku.
Italy’s Euro 2020 winning stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma was the only goalkeeper to make the list.
That decision has now drawn criticism from Mendy’s Chelsea teammates.
Central defender Thiago Silva posted on his Instagram account: “He won the Champions League as one of the best goalkeepers?? Left off the list for the Ballon d’Or?”
Silva’s defensive partner Antonio Rudiger wrote on Twitter after the game: “Someone explain why he’s not nominated for the Ballon d’Or.
“What a performance… EDOUARD MENDY.”
Saturday’s Chilwell told the Chelsea website after the game to underline Mendy’s performance: “I’m happy to score a goal but I think we have got to thank Edou.
“I don’t know how many saves he made but there were a lot of very important saves and he does it every week for us. He bails us out, whether it’s once or twice, or in this game on several occasions. He’s a world-class goalkeeper and is the one we’ve got to thank.
“It just gives you confidence when you know you’ve got someone like that behind you that comes to collect the ball from crosses, is a brilliant shot-stopper and good with his feet.
“We see it every day in training but now he’s getting the credit he deserves and in these sorts of games where he makes big saves, he gets us the three points in the end.”
Mendy has the best defensive record of any goalkeeper in the league – the Blues have conceded just three goals across their eight Premier League matches to date.
