The investigative journalist and documentary maker was surprised to enjoy watching boyfriend Kevin perform in Singin’ in the Rain – and has explains what had her on edge about his involvement in the show
Stacey Dooley has candidly opened up about her concerns over boyfriend Kevin Clifton’s involvement in a new West End show as he rebuilds his career after he quit Strictly Come Dancing.
The 34-year-old documentary maker fell for 39-year-old Kevin when they both participated in Strictly back in 2018 – with the pair ultimately winning the contest.
Kevin shocked Strictly fans in March 2020 when he quit the hit BBC in order to pursue other plans – only for his hopes to crack into the dance and performance world away from Strictly to be derailed by the Covid pandemic weeks later.
Now the hunk is on stage and performing to crowds at the Sadler’s Wells theatre in Angel in a performance of Singin’ In The Rain.
Speaking on her BBC Sounds Stacey Dooley: Fresh Starts podcast, Stacey revealed she is often on edge when she’s in a theatre with Kevin for a range of reasons.
But first she praised her boyfriend for his show.
Stacey gushed: “I went to go and watch Kev last night for the first time, I just thought it was completely brilliant, I enjoyed every single second.
“I was worried initially because I thought, ‘this is going to go on and on’, because it’s quite long…
“I was worried about how far away the interval felt.”
Peeling back the curtain on the inner workings of her relationship with Kevin, Stacey went on to explain she gets frustrated when he treats her like she’s never been to the theatre before.
She explained: “I hate it – whenever I go to the theatre with Kev, he’s so extra because it’s his world, it’s his scene, and he really enjoys it, he doesn’t want to be distracted in any way.
“He talks to me like I’ve never been to the theatre before, like I’m totally unaware of the etiquette.
“So he’s like, before we’ve sat down, once we’ve sat down, just before it’s about to start: ‘Have you turned your phone off?’
“And I’m like, ‘Kev, I understand!’”
Defending himself, Kevin – who was in the same podcast interview – said: “Because it’s the most embarrassing thing in the world if you’re sat with someone in a theatre and their phone goes off!”
Stacey argued: “But how many times do you need to ask babe? It’s like I’ve never ever been in a theatre before, pre-Kevin Clifton.”
Last year, Kevin admitted he was jealous of Stacey’s career when she was able to carry on working during lockdown while he was sat at home to twiddle his thumbs due to the pandemic shutting down the entertainment industry.
He said last July: “This last month, I’ve started to get an itching to get back to work, and my girlfriend is back at work.
“I’m getting jealous of that. I’m starting to get really fed up now. It’s been an excuse to sit and play my PlayStation and just watch Netflix, but now I wish I could be performing.”
