Shonda Rhimes has written and rewritten the ending of Grey’s Anatomy several times.

The American television producer has confessed she doesn’t know how the medical drama will end, but has had a few ideas about its conclusion.

Speaking with Variety, the award-winning writer also admitted that she isn’t even sure if she’ll be the one to decide the show’s ending.

“I’ve written the end of that series, I want to say, a good eight times,” the mum-of-three explained in her new interview.

“I was like, ‘And that will be the end!’ Or, ‘That’ll be the final thing that’s ever said or done!’ And all of those things have already happened. So I give up on that, you know what I mean?”

Shonda, 51, hasn’t acted as the showrunner on Grey’s Anatomy since 2017, when she handed over the reigns to Krista Vernoff.

The star – who also created political thriller series Scandal – hinted that she might not be the one to decide Grey’s Anatomy’s final fate.

“Am I going to be the person who decides like what the final scene is? I don’t know!” she admitted.

“If you’d ask me this question three years ago, or prior to Krista arriving, I would have said, ‘Yes, I can tell you exactly how it’s going to end.’

But once you hand off the ball for real, it’s just different. So I don’t know yet.”

One thing the star will decide for certain is the date the long-running series comes to an end.

The Chicago-born writer confirmed she will be the one who decides when Grey’s Anatomy airs for the final time, adding: “And I take full responsibility for that when or if everybody gets mad at me.”

Grey’s Anatomy first appeared on television screens back in 2005 and is currently airing its 18th season.

The much-loved show focuses on the lives of medical professionals developing in their career, while balancing personal and professional relationships.

A hit with both critics and viewers, Grey’s Anatomy has received numerous awards over the years, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Drama and a total of 38 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including two for Outstanding Drama Series. The cast members have also received accolades for their individual performances.

When quizzed about the show’s legacy, series creator Shona credits the medical drama with helping show more people of colour on television.

“Sadly, I think the legacy might simply just be that we made it possible for more people of colour to have jobs on camera on television, which makes me embarrassed for television,” she explained.

“It sounds arrogant to say it, but to me it makes me sad to have to say it: we changed the faces that you see on television. It should not have taken so long for that to happen.”
