Sheffield United manager Slavisa Jokanovic has given an encouraging update on midfielder John Fleck, who was rushed to hospital after collapsing during his side’s 1-0 win over Reading.

With the Blades leading 1-0, Fleck went down to the ground seemingly unchallenged, before his team-mates quickly indicated for the medics to run on the pitch to help him.

Fleck, 30, appeared to receive emergency attention and after a 10-minute delay, he was taken off on a stretcher and out of the Madejski Stadium to a waiting ambulance.

The game was then obviously marred with a sense of shock and uncertainty, but Jokanovic has since given words of encouragement about Fleck’s well-being.

After the match, the Blades boss said: “I cannot comment so much but Fleck is conscious, he is in the hospital in good hands and we expect he will be okay.”

Jokanovic was shaken up along with the rest of his side, the opposition and the spectators, and explained later that he didn’t realise what had happened when Fleck fell to the ground.

The Blades boss went on to say: “No, to be honest. I didn’t see exactly what happened. One moment he fell down and It was really complicated moment for him and for us too.

“For sure, honestly I didn’t see what happened everything was quick, both benches going insane. As I said before, Fleck is conscious and we have asked for the result. We hope he is okay.”

Thankfully the Royal Berkshire Hospital is a just a short distance from where the match was being played, and a statement from the South Yorkshire Police confirmed: “From what we are being told, John Fleck is alert and communicating with emergency services staff following the horrible incident.

“Fingers crossed for a full recovery.”

The incident happened midway through the second half as Fleck collapsed to the ground without any other player nearby, which resulted in players from both teams frantically gesturing to the sidelines for medical assistance to be rushed onto the pitch to attend to the Scotsman.

Fleck was then immediately attended to and received oxygen on the pitch, before he was assisted off the field and taken into the back of an ambulance, where he was then rushed to the nearby Royal Berkshire Hospital.

Blades captain Billy Sharp helped carry the stretcher that took the 30-year-old off the pitch, as everyone’s thoughts turned away from the outcome of the match and towards the player’s health.

As Fleck was carried from the pitch, all sides of Reading’s Madesjki Stadium rose to their feet to applaud Fleck from the field of play and Conor Hourihane replaced him in midfield for the Blades, who held on to a 1-0 victory thanks to Jayden Bogle’s strike earlier on.
