Senegal manager Aliou Cisse said Sadio Mane’s injury was “nothing serious” after the Liverpool midfielder limped off during the international break.

The dynamic forward was forced to depart his country’s 1-1 draw against Togo after less than half an hour.

The sight of Mane pulling up short and sinking into the turf after 20 minutes would have raised many pulses, not just amongst his national teammates, but among Jurgen Klopp’s side also.

Fortunately, his national team manager was able to calm his nation’s, and that of Liverpool’s, greatest fears; explaining that his early substitution was precautionary rather than forced.

“Yes the exit of Sadio Mane has destabilised us,” said Cisse.

“He is an important player for the team.

“We took him out as a precaution and there is nothing serious.”

Senegal were able to snatch a late draw, despite the former Southampton man’s absence.

The Lions of Teranga came into the contest against Togo having already qualified for the 2022 World Cup.

Nevertheless, Cisse proceeded to deploy a very strong first eleven, containing the Liverpool winger as well as Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, Napoli central defender Kalidou Koulibaly, and Watford forward Ismaila Sarr.

Despite the quality in his side, it was the Togolese who opened the scoring.

Olympiacos central defender Pape Abou Cisse headed a venomous corner into his own net to give the home side a lead on the stroke of half-time.

Senegal manager Aliou Cisse confirmed Sadio Mane’s injury was not too serious

Senegal looked to be heading towards a first defeat of their World Cup qualifier campaign, but RC Strasbourg Alsace striker Habib Diallo popped up in the dying seconds to rescue a draw.

It was the first time the Lions of Teranga had dropped points in Group H.

They came into the contest having won all of their qualifying matches against Togo, Congo, and Namibia.

However, the biggest celebration for both Cisse and Klopp’s side was reserved for Mane’s fitness.

While it does not in any way, shape or form compare with the injury nightmare they endured last season, Klopp’s men have struggled with injuries this season.

Mane’s fellow striker Roberto Firmino has recently been ruled out for up to four weeks after suffering a hamstring injury.

Sadio Mane has been a vital player for Liverpool, scoring six Premier League goals this season

The Brazilian went down clutching his hamstring in the 2-0 home victory against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

A few days after the injury, a very frustrated Klopp confirmed Liverpool fans’ worst fears a couple of days before the Reds’ away defeat to West Ham United.

“Bobby is not good news with a serious hamstring injury, really unfortunate,” the Liverpool manager told the club’s website.

“We don’t know exactly how long he will be out but it will be not now after the international break directly. We have to work on that.”

Mane’s current state will be a huge relief to Liverpool supporters who are still likely frustrated by the fact their unbeaten start to the season was ended by David Moyes’ in-form West Ham side.

They will need to recover after the international break where they host Mikel Arteta’s confident Arsenal side at Anfield.
