Bollywood star Puneeth Rajkumar has died following a heart attack that happened during a gym session

Puneeth Rajkumar has died at the age of 46.

The Indian star – who appeared in several Bollywood blockbusters including Thayige Thakka Maga, Vasantha Geetha and Bhagyavantha – passed away from a heart attack.

Reports claim that the screen icon complained of chest pains during a gym session around 11 am on Friday and was seen by a doctor who diagnosed him with an acute heart attack.

He was immediately taken to Vikram Hospital in Bengaluru, the capital of southern Karnataka state and was later pronounced dead at 2.30pm.

Dr. Ranganath Nayak, a cardiologist at the hospital, said in a statement that Rajkumar was unresponsive and his heart had ceased beating when he arrived, CNN report.

“Mr Puneeth Rajkumar was an extremely fit 46-year-old gentleman. This morning, after his routine exercise, he complained of chest pain and was taken to his family doctor where he was diagnosed with an acute heart attack and he was immediately referred to our hospital for further management.

“On arrival at our hospital, Mr. Puneeth Rajkumar was non-responsive and his heart had stopped – this is called Cardiac Asystole.”

The star worked as an actor, television presenter, singer and producer.

He had lead roles in over 29 movies and hosted the Indian edition of Who Wants to be a Millionaire.

His body will be kept at Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru so that fans can pay their respects to the actor.

Following news of Puneeth’s passing huge amounts of fans have gathered outside the stadium to mourn the personality.

The Indian Times report that close to 6000 police personnel have been deployed along with 40 KSRP platoons, city armed reserve and RAF to the area to manage the large crowds.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted following the star’s death.

“A cruel twist of fate has snatched away from us a prolific and talented actor, Puneeth Rajkumar. This was no age to go,” he penned in a tweet.

“The coming generations will remember him fondly for his works and wonderful personality. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

Big Bollywood names have also taken to social media to pay tribute to Puneeth.

Rakul Preet Singh penned on Twitter: “This is shocking! At a loss for words…RIP #PuneethRajkumar. strength and condolences to the family.”

“You were the most-kindest and the simplest person I’ve met. The world has lost another gem. My heartfelt condolences to your family and friends. Om Shanti,” tweeted Sanjay Dutt.

Anil Kapoor wrote: “shocking and extremely sad… #PuneethRajkumar. Sending my heartfelt condolences and prayers to the family.”

Abhishek Bachchan added: “Heartbreaking news! Gone too soon. #PuneethRajkumar. My condolences to his family and his fans. You will be missed.”

In order to mourn the actor, several cinema halls across Bangalore closed for the day and stopped screening movies in the city.

Several popular pubs across the city also closed down after news broke of the star’s death.

Puneeth Rajkumar is survived by wife Ashwini Revanth and has two children.
