Penny Lancaster pulled her own baby out during childbirth

Penny Lancaster stunned fellow Loose Women panellists on Friday’s show.

In a debate over whether women should have a gas-and-air-free birth to help save the planet, Penny said that she “wouldn’t have been able to have children without it.”

The wife of rocker Rod Stewart shared the moment she realised she had to pull as well as push.

Penny said: “My first was an attempted water birth, but the baby’s heartbeat slowed down so I had to get out and was basically commanded by the doctor to push as hard as I could.

“Otherwise if I couldn’t, he would have to do a Caesarean,” she explained.

Her first child, Alastair, had the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck, so she explained that she had to push even harder to get him out as quickly as possible.

Clearly sensing the disbelief from her peers, she asked if they wanted a demonstration, explaining that a hormone is released that allows the hips to expand to help ease the baby out.

The mum-of-two added that if the woman is already in a squatting position, gravity works with you to allow you to open the hips even more.

Liberty X’s hit Just a little was her song of choice to “get her into the mood” she said as she stood in front of the audience and squatted in her black and white polka dot dress.

Bouncing up and down, she then mimicked pulling the newborn from under her, revealing: “and baby came out on the Lino, as Rod likes to say.”

She demonstrated the birth to her fellow panellists who watched in disbelief

She said that her second birth with Aiden was “more pleasant”. She said: “The second one was a more pleasant water birth and I pulled Aidan out myself.

“The head had come out and the doctor said ‘on the next contraction the baby’s shoulders will come out so if you want to assist your baby just hold him by the chin, the back of the head and away you go! So I pulled him out, onto my chest”

Special constable Penny called her second birth was a “family affair”, adding that Rod was behind her, Alistair was watching as was Rod’s daughter Ruby and her mum was on camera duties.

She was asked if Rod had been singing as she was in labour and she said: “I think there was a few tunes in there!”

When Kaye Adams questioned the other presenters on their thoughts on women giving up gas and air to save the planet, Penny replied: “I did use it and if I hadn’t I don’t think I’d have been able to have my children, so it’s like shall we just tell women ‘don’t give birth anymore’?

“We need some help, we are bringing a human being into the world for god’s sake.”

She added that she “loved” giving birth, citing it as a “great experience”.
