Paul Scholes has told the next Manchester United manager that Jadon Sancho needs to be utilised far more regularly.

The winger was a summer arrival from Borussia Dortmund, but has struggled to settle back in England.

His quality convinced United to pay north of £70m for his services and plenty was expected of the 21-year-old.

However Sancho has struggled for consistency and as a result was in and out of the starting XI under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, sometimes not even making it off the bench.

When the Norwegian was sacked Sancho was yet to score or register an assist.

In the first match under Michael Carrick however the former Dortmund winger scored his first goal during the 2-0 win over Villarreal.

The summer signing had struggled to make an impact since his summer move

Scholes believes the key to getting the best from Sancho will be allowing him a consistent run of games – and in the right position.

He said on BT Sport: “I think he was Manchester United’s best player tonight. They need to use him more.

“Playing in this team is a little bit different because he doesn’t have a flying full-back that he had at Dortmund. Because he’s not a flying machine himself.

“But he wants to be playing further forward. He’s such a clever footballer.”

“He’s a player who wants to play in a possession game but he won’t get that a lot in the big games like on Sunday and he needs to adjust his game a bit to be more of a counter-attacking player.

“He looks like the player we signed for £70 odd million”

Owen Hargreaves also highlighted the role of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who could be crucial in unlocking Sancho’s quality if he is to make a home on the right.

“They need a partnership him and Wan-Bissaka whether on the inside or out,” he claimed.

“The link-up he had at Dortmund with Hakimi and Haaland in a triangle which was unplayable now he needs the partners to play behind him and the one who’s going to play 1-2s.”

Sancho’s strike came after Cristiano Ronaldo had opened the scoring in Spain.

The three points means United have qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League for the first time in three seasons.

Michael Carrick said after the win: ” I have enjoyed it I enjoyed the whole thing it has not been an easy few days for the club but that result almost feels like it was for Ole and I cant get away from that.

“But we had a job to do and things needed to be taken care of and thankfully it all went to plan again.”
