Our Yorkshire Farm’s Amanda Owen defends sharing a tragic photo of a dead cow

Our Yorkshire Farm star Amanda Owen explained the reason she felt it was important to share an image of a dead cow.

The shepherdess had uploaded the heartbreaking photo on social media for her followers to see and said ‘it’s reality and it happens’.

She told PA news agency: “I’ve never shied away from that on social media, I’ve put pictures up when I’ve had various issues, and when I do my presentation there’s a dead cow in a bog.

“Is it a picture that you’d want to stare at for ages? Probably not, but it’s reality and it happens, and that’s why it’s important that you take it as a whole.”

Amanda continued: “We’re very fortunate that we live in this beautiful place, but it comes with its challenges.

“But everybody, wherever you are, whether you live in a tower block in Leeds, or whether you live on a remote high fill farm, we all face challenges and one of the binding factors in the challenges that we face is how to feed ourselves.

“Food waste is an enormous problem, throwing away food yet other people not being able to access food, that is just so tragic.”

The Channel 5 series, Our Yorkshire Farm, is a huge hit with viewers as they watch Amanda, her husband Clive and their nine children navigate their lives on their farm.

Viewers of the series will get to see the glamour as well as the difficulties of raising animals and sometimes living without water or electricity.

The star and her family star in the Channel 5 series Our Yorkshire Farm

In July, the family were in tears after a prematurely delivered calf tragically died, leaving the family heartbroken.

The fate of Kit Kat the calf brought sadness after she was unable to make it despite the best efforts of four-year-old Clemmy, who hand-fed the calf in the hopes of saving her.

Amanda helped the calf to be delivered and Clemmy asked: “Is it too cold for the cow to go out to its mother?”

“Yes, it’s going to be below freezing tonight,” the Shepherdess replied before adding: So, she’s got a little jacket on but it’s going to be better if we can keep her.”

Amanda continued: “She’s still not a very well calf, she’s not very strong, she’s not as strong as the other calves, is she?

“So, there still is a chance… 50/50 that she might not make it, die.”

There was a little hope the following morning as the calf suckled milk from her mother but the good news ended there as the calf took a turn for the worse.

Unfortunately, the animal was later found dead in the barn.
