OPPO’s ‘stock Android’ ColorOS 12 right approach all along

To say the least, Google’s Android 12 rollout this year has been unusual. The fundamental operating system leaves us scratching our heads, from a source code drop to a delay for the Pixel family. When you consider what Android 12 means for OEM skins, the puzzle deepens.

Indeed, some of the new Android 12 features make you rethink what’s important in a stock Android experience. There are more customization possibilities for Android than ever before, but what about the features? Finding the proper mix of basic functionality with a few well-designed extensions on top is the key to a great Android experience.

Consider Samsung, which has transitioned from its bloated TouchWiz design to a far smoother, cleaner One UI skin. With a couple of its own features, the OEM embraced what users liked about standard Android. Samsung, on the other hand, is far from the sole company to take the Android experience to new heights.

OPPO figured out the key of success with its ColorOS, Last year’s launch coincided with the release of Android 11. Android 12 now takes it a step further, including some of the best features of OPPO’s design. Perhaps it’s time to discover what else OPPO has to offer.

The speed and coverage

It feels like a race every time a new version of Android is released to have the software loaded on your phone. You feel special for being one among the first, and you get to show your pals the great new features. OPPO has nailed the initial layer of an Android launch in this area.

It held the distinction of being one of the first to introduce ColorOS 11 to the market, following Android 11. To make things simple, OPPO skipped the titles of Color OS 8, 9, and 10. As a result, there was no doubt about which version of the software you were using, and getting there was nearly instantaneous. The update was downloaded by more than 120 million OPPO customers, allowing them to take advantage of Android’s freshest and greatest features.

The adoption of an efficient Android skin is the next layer that distinguishes OPPO from the competition. ColorOS hasn’t always been the cleanest, but OPPO has incorporated user feedback into the development process. Some of the coolest ColorOS 11 personalization features, like as the configurable wallpaper with matching app icons, have even helped shape Google’s new Material You language.

OPPO preserved the stock Android shortcuts and apps. After receiving criticism for the lack of Google apps and shortcuts in the early years, they have reintroduced the Google feed on every new device since 2019. Google’s top experiences and apps, such as Android Auto and Google Pay, were also included. Even better, there are fewer preinstalled apps and additional privacy safeguards to keep you focused on what’s important.

Slimmed-down for smoothness

Stock Because Android is light and speedy, it is a popular choice among consumers. Third-party developers must create their own distinctive skin without causing the core operating system to slow down.

Since ColorOS 7, OPPO has emphasised a smoother experience, which is even more obvious on ColorOS 12. Thousands of engineers worked to separate ColorOS from its underlying architecture, and it feels nearly as fluid as stock Android. The team has been working for two years to streamline and improve the entire system.

The long-awaited merging of OPPO’s OxygenOS and ColorOS also plays a role in maintaining the fluid experience. The two operating systems have combined their research and development efforts in order to create a future architecture that is simple and unified. This should result in speedier, more seamless upgrades with the smart features that have made OPPO a household name.

The move is wonderful news for both OPPO and OnePlus fans, and it bodes well for Android’s future. We’ll have to wait and see what the merger means for Android as a whole. OPPO is combining the speed and simplicity of OxygenOS with the extensive features and customization choices of ColorOS.
