Atalanta v Manchester United: Match in Pictures

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hailed “incredible” Cristiano Ronaldo and compared him to basketball legend Michael Jordan.

United were heading for defeat when Ronaldo produced yet another moment of magic, equalising with a stunning volleyed finish in the 91st minute.

It was Ronaldo’s second goal of the night and his fifth in four Champions League games since returning to United for a second spell.

Solskjaer paid tribute to Ronaldo, 36, and compared him to former Chicago Bulls superstar Jordan in terms of his influence.

“Cristiano is just incredible,” said Solskjaer. “We all have our roles and responsibilities and Cristiano is a leader in the group, he scores goals.

“If there’s anyone you want a chance to fall to – and a difficult chance – it’s him. It’s just incredible.

“We’re not happy conceding two goals. But I’m sure the Chicago Bulls didn’t mind having Michael Jordan either.

“Sometimes the teams have the players they have and that’s why they are at Manchester United or Chicago Bulls, and you come up with those moments.

“Cristiano is getting better and better for us, he’s feeling better and up to speed now

Ronaldo, who took his Champions League goal tally to 139 with his double, said: “We still have to improve. We have to adapt but it will take time. We have time to improve.

“It was a difficult game. We never give up and we believe until the end. It’s a good result for us. We did our job well. We’re lucky I scored but that’s football.”

The win maintained United’s position at the top of Group F with two games to play, but former United duo Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes were unconvinced.

“They can’t have that second performance against Manchester City on Saturday,” said Ferdinand. “If they do, they’ll get slapped by three, four or five goals again.

Scholes said: “They played alright on Saturday, but tonight it was messy. As soon as Raphael Varane went off, it went all over the place really shaky.

“Harry Maguire just doesn’t look right and I don’t want to say it again and with no Varane Saturday, it has to be a worry.

“If you’re Pep Guardiola you’d think you have a good chance to win. City think that anyway, but with no Varane it’s going to be more difficult.”
