Police later provided an update, saying that at about 5:30 p.m. officers received a report of an altercation where someone brandished a knife at the Great Mall.

“Shortly after a shooting was reported inside of Burlington Coat Factory,” the tweet said. “Officers have checked the business and there is no indication a shooting occurred inside.”

Police went on to say they were “in the process of checking the entire mall out of an abundance of caution” after receiving conflicting information.

“At this time we have not located nor have any reported victims related to the initial call regarding the knife or shooting,” Milpitas police said.

There were some social media posts saying there was an active shooter, with some Great Mall visitors reporting that they were ordered to shelter in place during the incident.

Police said that as Officers located shoppers and store employees who sheltered in place, they were escorting them out of the mall.

Chopper 5 footage showed over dozens of Milpitas police units and police vehicles from neighboring agencies.

KPIX reporter Len Ramirez said those agencies included CHP and San Jose police in the parking lot at the mall. He also said that he saw CHP officers armed with semi-automatic weapons along with other heavily armed officers.

Milpitas police later confirmed that San Jose police, CHP and the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office were all assisting with the search of the interior of the mall.

Activity seems to be concentrated outside the Burlington Coat Factory store, he said.

Ramirez said that some customers could be seen leaving the mall. Police did not seem to be escorting people at the mall away from the facility.

VTA officials said due to police activity, light rail service has been suspended at the Great Mall station until further notice.

The Great Mall was formerly a Ford assembly plant that was converted in 1994 to a large retail site of some 179 stores and restaurants.
