Mikel Arteta reviews Watford victory

It’s been a huge week for Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.

The Spaniard came under huge pressure at the start of the season after their slow start saw them go into the first international break bottom of the Premier League pile with zero points after three games.

Fast forward to a little over two months later and they now sit in fifth place, just two points off a Champions League spot.

During the past two months, Arteta has faced some huge decisions which have included him giving his backing to the club’s new first-choice goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale after he dropped Bernd Leno.

It’s not the only one of his decisions which have been proven correct, and he’s also now facing another big choice following captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s penalty miss against Watford over the weekend.

Here’s a round-up of all of the latest Arsenal headlines.

Arteta proved right

After Emile Smith Rowe missed out on England manager Gareth Southgate’s initial squad for the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers, Mikel Arteta claimed that the uproar caused was testament to his quality and that his chance wouldn’t be far away.

With Marcus Rashford and James Ward-Prowse both withdrawing the Arsenal playmaker has now got his chance and the young Arsenal midfielder has officially been called up to the squad.

The Arsenal academy graduate, now a regular in the starting XI, has scored in his last three games to help the Gunners rise up the table and has now been rewarded for his fine form.

But even before the call-up, Arteta explained why Smith Rowe can be very happy about the recognition he’s getting.

Arteta’s penalty taker decision

Gunners captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was left heartbroken after missing his second successive penalty in the match against Watford.

The Gabon international stepped up to take the spot-kick after Danny Rose fouled Alexandre Lacazette in the area, but his effort was saved by Ben Foster as the Watford keeper gathered the rebound.

It comes after Emiliano Martinez denied him from the spot when Arsenal beat Aston Villa a fortnight ago – although the forward did put home the rebound on that occasion.

Boss Arteta has now made an announcement on who will be taking penalties going forward following the latest miss.

Arsenal’s fans ‘should be ashamed’

Sir Alex Ferguson claims Arsenal’s fans should be “ashamed” for the way they treated Arsene Wenger in the latter part of his tenure.

The Frenchman led the Gunners for over two decades after taking charge in the mid-1990s.

He was the first man to consistently challenge Manchester United’s dominance of the Premier League, winning three league titles in seven seasons as well as several FA Cups.

Even when they weren’t challenging for the title Wenger still ensured Arsenal remained regulars in the Champions League.

The Scot said in the new film, Arsene Wenger: Invincible: “He kept them in Europe every year and yet he was criticised. The supporters should be ashamed.

“Arsene and myself are dinosaurs, but we didn’t do so badly.”
