Who will get the Manchester United job?

Manchester United would need to pay PSG £10million if they want to prise Mauricio Pochettino away from the Parc des Princes.

The Red Devils are on the look out for a new manager having sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sunday.

Michael Carrick has been placed in interim charge with the club stating they are looking to appoint a manager until the end of the season.

The plan was then to go after their main target in the summer, without the complications of midseason negotiations.

However, Pochettino is supposedly open to the possibility of taking charge at Old Trafford despite only signing a new deal at PSG this year.

The Argentine has not yet been in his role in Paris for 12 months but his camp have spoken with United about the vacancy.

His current compensation package would almost half in the summer, when he would have a year left on his contract, but there is a willingness to get a deal done sooner.

Pochettino has a wealth of experience in England having spent five-and-a-half years at Tottenham before leaving in November 2019. Prior to that he was at Southampton.

He failed to win any silverware but was praised for the work he did in north London having had minimal investment compared to his rivals.

The 49-year-old was the original favourite to take over from Jose Mourinho back in 2018.

Solskjaer’s interim stint, which included a win over Pochettino’s Tottenham at Wembley, was enough to get him the job permanently however.

United now look to have returned and want the Argentine to revive their fortunes.

Pochettino’s style and conduct appears to suit the club’s traditions which makes the move seem even more logical.

In Paris he has reportedly grown frustrated with his role, which is largely focusing on coaching matters whilst board members deal with transfers among other things.

The Argentine is working with a star-studded squad that includes Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar – which has served to heighten expectations.

PSG’s Qatari owners crave Champions League success, with a final defeat in 2020 the closest they’ve come, and Pochettino is the man tasked with delivering the European Cup.

He is currently in Manchester as he prepares his current side for a clash on the blue half of the city.

He told the Daily Mail : “We are capable and if all the players are committed to the project then, for sure, we are going to be close to winning the Champions League.

“[But] people think like it’s an obligation to win. In football, if you play like you feel there is an obligation, it’s difficult to be successful, to win.”
