Lockdown news: England could see restrictions ‘within three weeks’ as hospitalisations soa | UK | News

This could see, as a minimum, the return of mandatory use of face masks in public places, as well as people being advised to work from home again. The warning comes less than a week after Boris Johnson scrapped most of the remaining legally binding Covid restrictions on so-called “Freedom Day”. Previous modelling had indicated daily Covid hospitalisations in the UK would peak at between 1,000 and 2,000 admissions by the end of August.

Deaths from the deadly virus were also predicted to number between 100 and 200 within the the same period.

However, hospital admissions and deaths from Covid continue to soar.

Data from the Government’s own coronavirus website show that within the last seven days, hospital referrals for Covid patients had increased by 38.6 percent.

Covid deaths over the same time frame had gone up by almost 60 percent.

iNews reports that new modelling suggests there could be almost 1,500 admissions by the end of the first week of August, which would point to a peak of 3,000 by the month’s end.

This would equal the height of the first wave in April 2020, indicating the need for tightened restrictions.

He emphasised that should a vaccine resistant strain emerge or deaths surge after the summer, he would take “whatever steps necessary to protect the public.”

The Government’s decision to push ahead with Freedom Day has attracted strong criticism from many within the international scientific community.
