Matt Lucas puts on German accent on The Great British Bake Off

Little Britain star Matt Lucas has become a German citizen thanks to his grandmother.

The Great British Bake Off host took to Twitter announcing his new status as he proudly displayed his welcome gift from the German Embasssy.

Captioning a pic of a shiny new badge displaying the British and German flags he wrote:”My grandma fled Berlin in 1938. Having been offered citizenship, I have just been to the German Embassy in London to collect my Certificate of Naturalisation.

“I am officially Anglo-German. They gave me some Gummibärchen and this lovely badge. Now to choose a German football team.”

Matt’s post was met with a flurry of support from his fans with one saying: “Well done….. celebrations with the Jurgenator,” with a nod to last night’s star baker Jurgen.

Matt said he now needs to think which German football team to support

Matt recently regaled Jurgen with his rendition of The Flinstones’ theme tune in German.

Taking to Twitter, viewers were very impressed, with one saying: “Matt Lucas singing The Flintstones in German is something I never knew I needed to hear. But that was wonderful.”

However Matt’s love of Germany hasn’t always gone down well with viewers.

Matt came under fire for using a German accent on the show

Matt and co-host Noel Fielding dressed up as German band Karftwerk and performed in German accents in a bizarre introduction to German week on the Channel 4 baking show.

However Matt seemed to have been bitten by the accent bug as he repeatedly used a German accent throughout the episode.

Eagled-eyed viewers thought they spotted that German contestant Jurgen appeared less than impressed as fans picked up on tension between the two.

Fans felt Jurgen was unimpressed with Matt’s German impersonations

Viewers didn’t feel Matt’s accent was appropriate and slammed the star on social media.

However Matt responded to claims his German accent was offensive saying he was only acting.

He wrote: “I am Anglo-German. I am a citizen of both countries, with passports for each, so I’ll do a ropey German accent any time I like.

“Mind you, I’ll probably also do a French accent and an Italian one, if I fancy. Cause acting innit.”

Matt’s accent is not the only thing viewers have taken issue with.

Matt has faced criticism over his presenting skills on the show

The comedian was trending on Twitter during last night’s episode of Bake Off with many complaining that he wasn’t funny and an irritation on the show.

One fan fumed: “Matt Lucas makes me want to set fire to my pubes and drink 5 litres of Domestos.”

To which Matt replied: “I’d say do it.”

Another viewer wrote: “I don’t think I’ve laughed once at Matt Lucas in Bake Off.”

While a third tweeted: “I’m trying to stick with #GBBO, but every single week Matt Lucas ruins it a bit more.”
