Kate Garraway shared an update on her husband Derek Draper’s health battle, and said she hoped the former lobbyist would be ‘setting up a new venture’ as soon as he recovers from the effects of Long Covid
Kate Garraway said she ‘dragged her feet’ as she tried to avoid the emotional task of clearing out her husband Derek Draper’s office.
The Good Morning Britain presenter had regularly updated her fans with updates on the former lobbyist’s health battle, after he was hospitalised in March 2020 with Covid-19.
She took to Instagram on Thursday to reveal she had been forced to clear out Derek’s offices, which she had kept in the hope he would need them once he had made a full recovery.
Sharing a snap of her smiling with a removal driver, the 54-year-old telly host said she had so far tried to avoid packing up his offices because it would be too heartbreaking.
“So… one of things have been tackling is packing up Derek’s therapy rooms & office.
“Had been dragging my feet because I knew it would be so emotional & because I didn’t want to seem to be giving up hope of him returning to the work he loves one day,” she candidly wrote.
“Then the building was put up for sale and we had to clear out – fate! Next problem was the huge task of packing up all his files, his cuttings, books and furniture he’s treasured for decades,” Kate continued.
She said she was helped with the seemingly impossible task by a local removals firm, who she praised for being “so sensitive to the situation”.
The former I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here star then revealed her hope for the future, that one day her husband will be able to get back to work, and the removal firm can help them when that day comes.
“Thanks a million chaps – will be definitely calling you when Derek is setting up his new venture!” Kate wrote.
Derek, 54, has endured a devastating health battle since he was rushed to hospital at the beginning of the pandemic last year, and was admitted to intensive care.
He was put in a medically induced coma by doctors, but the deadly virus had ravaged his body and organs, leaving him hospitalised for more than a year before he was able to come home to wife Kate and their two children – daughter Darcey, 15, and son William, 12.
He now needs 24-hour care from a team of dedicated medical staff, and sleeps for more than 20 hours a day.
Last month, Kate sadly confessed she has one wish, and that is to hear her husband’s loud, booming voice once again.
“I would give everything I own to hear him being really shouty and full of opinions, ruffling feathers in the way that he used to,” she told The Telegraph.
“The way he would sing so loudly in the mornings – and was generally just so loud! It would drive me mad,” Kate added.
