Arsenal legend Paul Merson claims he understands why the club joined the European Super League in April.

Gunners director Josh Kroenke recently apologised for the decision after thousands of fans protested against the doomed project.

Arsenal were one of 12 big European clubs, including six from the Premier League, to join the ESL in a move that rocked football.

The proposal saw the “Dirty Dozen” – as they were dubbed – guaranteed entry into the lucrative competition, bypassing European football’s meritorious system.

Most of the 12 clubs involved have since apologised for the ESL proposal, with Kroenke admitting Arsenal were “obviously” wrong during an interview with Sky Sports.

When asked if the relationship between the owners and fans had reached an all-time low, Kroenke said: “I wouldn’t disagree with you.

“I’ll say it that way. But as someone that always tries to find the positives in things, when you’re at the bottom, there’s only one way to go and that’s back up.

“I said this to our fan advisory board who we met with, I don’t want a 48-hour period to define us. We were presented with an opportunity.

“We asked ourselves a question, which was what was worse, a Super League or Super League without Arsenal? And we answered that question that we should be included in that.

“Were we wrong? Obviously. We listened to our fans. We made a quick pivot, removed ourselves from the situation. We apologised, and now we move forward.

“And some of the dialogue that I’ve had with some of the support groups has been as clear as crystal.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be communicating with them on the level that I am because I understand who they are and now they’re understanding who I am.

“And I think the more we understand each other it’s exciting because the only thing that we want is for Arsenal FC to be great.”

And after hearing Kroenke’s reasoning for joining the ESL, Merson had sympathy for Arsenal – but not rivals Manchester United and Liverpool.

The pundit told Sky Sports: “It’s true what he said, they gave it up. Was it better with Arsenal in the Super League? Of course it was at the time.

“Then they listened to the fans and were one of the first to pull themselves out of it. I understood Arsenal doing it. Arsenal are struggling.

“They’re not the Arsenal [of old]. They were struggling and someone goes, ‘Do you want to come in the Super League?’

How do you rate Mikel Arteta’s time at Arsenal? Have your say!

“Me, I was disappointed with Liverpool and Man Utd. Man Utd are the biggest club in the world, they should have gone, ‘No, there won’t be a Super League without us.’

“With Arsenal and Tottenham I think they had to do it. They probably thought, ‘I can’t believe our luck, they’ve probably got the wrong number here have they?’

“But with United I didn’t get it, I was disappointed with Man Utd, they should have said no way like PSG did. PSG sat back and Bayern Munich and said, ‘You can’t do it without us.'”
