Jesy Nelson is ‘pouring pain over Little Mix feud into new songs’ after ‘tough’ week

After being accused of ‘blackfishing’ in the music video for her debut single, Boyz, Jesy Nelson’s solo career hasn’t got off to the best start but she’s reportedly determined to turn her heartache into new songs

Jesy Nelson was accused of blackfishing earlier this week

Jesy Nelson is reportedly back in the studio working on new music following the ‘blackfishing’ row surrounding her first solo single, Boyz.

Jesy’s music video was supposed to pay homage to rap and RnB songs of the early Noughties, which she loves.

But the singer was accused of cultural appropriation and trying to cash in on black culture after she sported a dark tan and braids in her hair.

Despite the backlash from unimpressed fans and her former Little Mix bandmates, the track still debuted at Number 5 in the UK charts.

The 30-year-old singer is now reportedly channelling all the negativity she’s received into making new songs.

An insider told MailOnline Jesy has spent the last couple of days in the recording studio which had become a “sanctuary” for her.

The source said: “She’s been pouring her heart and soul into writing new songs.”

“Jesy wants to focus solely on her music and solo career and not get caught up in further feuds with other artists.”

Undeterred Jesy has big plans for the future and her upcoming music, the source added.

Addressing the blackfishing claims, Jesy said: “My intention was never to offend people of colour with this video and my song.”

She added: “I’m very aware I am a white British woman. I’ve never said that I wasn’t.

“But I mean, like, I love Black culture. I love Black music. That’s all I know; it’s what I grew up on.”

Jesy shot to fame on the X factor in 2011 when she was put in a band with Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Perrie Edwards and Jade Thirlwall after all four auditioned separately.

The group were named Little Mix and went on to win the show – the first band to ever do so.

With hit singles like Wings, Black Magic and Shout out to My Ex they quickly became the biggest UK girl band since the Spice Girls, selling 60 million records worldwide.

In December 2020, after almost 10 years together, Jesy made the shock announcement she was leaving the band.

She wrote in a statement: “The truth is recently being in the band has really taken a toll on my mental health. I find the constant pressure of being in a girl group and living up to expectations very hard.

“There comes a time in life when we need to reinvest in taking care of ourselves rather than focussing on making other people happy, and I feel like now is the time to begin that process.

“So after much consideration and with a heavy heart, I’m announcing I’m leaving Little Mix.”

Jesy has since been accused of blindsiding the group by announcing her departure on Instagram rather than discussing it with them in person.

This has led to public falling outs with her former bandmates.
