Jack Wilshere says he has personally advised Declan Rice to reject transfer offers and stay at West Ham United.

Rice has been a stand-out player for West Ham over the past year and his performances have attracted the attention of Manchester United and Chelsea, among others.

The 22-year-old midfielder is under contract with the Hammers until June 2024, but has reportedly twice turned down the offer of improved terms with the club.

United’s problems in central midfield have been evident for a long time and their 4-2 defeat by Leicester on Saturday showed how bad they are currently.

According to ESPN , United are interested in signing Rice and have earmarked him as a priority target for the upcoming transfer windows in 2022.

However, with West Ham playing in the Europa League and flying high under David Moyes, Wilshere believes his former team-mate should stay put for now.

“I’ve always said – and I’ve said this to Dec too – why would he leave West Ham now?” he told talkSPORT .

“He’s the captain, he’s the main man, and he’s playing week-in week-out in the Premier League.

“They are going in a good direction.

“There will probably come a time when he will want to leave and win a title and play in the Champions League, maybe West Ham will play in the Champions League, but I don’t think they’ll win the title.

“But, for now, he’s doing well, and he’s playing week-in week-out.”

Moyes has made it clear on many occasions that West Ham would not consider selling Rice, with the east London club valuing the England international at around £100million.

Rice is a key player for the Hammers and has started nine of their 10 matches so far this season.

While his defensive qualities have never been in doubt, Rice has also shown an eye for goal by scoring in both of West Ham’s Europa League wins.

And before the 2-0 win over Rapid Vienna, he insisted he had not had his head turned by rumoured interest from other clubs.

“Everyone knows how I feel about West Ham and how I feel about playing under the manager and what it’s like playing with the group of players I’m playing with,” Rice said last month.

“I feel you can see in my performances nothing’s up, nothing’s concerning me. I’m playing with a smile on my face, I’m going out there, I’m leading the team.

“I think you could see a difference if I wasn’t going out there and giving 100 per cent but every time I’m putting on the shirt – I’ve got the armband on at the moment – my only objective is to go out there and give everything for the club and get three points.”
