Greta Thunberg arrives in Glasgow ahead of COP26

Hollyoaks bosses are so keen to get environmentalist Greta Thunberg on the show that they’ve named one of the shops after her.

The producers of the Channel 4 soap have been working to convince Greta to make a cameo appearance to highlight climate crisis topics on the show.

‘Sweater Thunberg’, a sustainable clothing stall, has a permanent place on the set and producers are now waiting for the climate activist to agree to join them for filming.

Scriptwriter Rebecca Ramsden said: “It would be amazing if she came down. Sweater Thunberg has been on the show for a year and we’ve always tried to put environmental issues at the top of our agenda. It’s a brilliant pun!”

Coinciding with COP26, this year’s UN Climate Change Conference, Hollyoaks, EastEnders, Emmerdale, Coronation Street, Doctors, Holby City and Casualty had scenes in episodes that discussed climate change topics such as fast-fashion and recycling.

It also featured characters swapping into other soaps through social media.

Soap bosses have promised that the green focus wasn’t a one off and that they will continue to weave the themes going forward.

Jeremy Clarkson, 61, has been hit with backlash over his “weird” and “angry” comments about Greta.

In his column for The Sunday Times, former Top Gear host wrote that the 18-year-old needed a “smacked bottom”.

“I simply don’t get the Thunberg phenomenon,” he wrote

“She has no knowledge of how the world works, no manners and no letters after her name because instead of going to school, she’s been busy sailing round the world so she can be mardy and abusive to grown-ups. What she needs is a smacked bottom.”

Greta fans hit back at his views, which were largely criticised for being archaic.

“Middle aged white men using column inches to have pops at a young girl who is concerned about the environment is just f***ing weird,” wrote one person.

Another wrote: “That Jeremy Clarkson thought it was ok to write that Greta Thunberg needs “a smacked bottom”… I simply cannot fathom. What year have I time-travelled back to exactly?”

“Today Jeremy Clarkson said Greta Thunberg ‘needs a smacked bottom’. Real normal s***,” joked someone else.

“What is it about Greta Thunberg that makes all old guys get angry and defensive? Brilliant to see so many young people in Glasgow caring about this planet,” wrote another Twitter user.

Greta also delivered a powerful speech to a youth protest in Glasgow, timed to coincide with COP26 also taking place in the city.

Clarkson has also previously branded her a “Swedish doom goblin” and “a pest”.

He claimed that Greta telling people what they should be doing to help save the planet was “pointless” and instead said she should go to countries where people are less aware of issues.
