Harry Maguire admits the Manchester United players let Ole Gunnar Solskjaer down after saying a tearful farewell to their former boss.

The United captain revealed they became emotional when a devastated Solskjaer told them at training on Sunday morning he had been sacked.

Maguire felt for Solskjaer and claims the players are to blame for his axing.

“It’s been a hard time for us because of the amount of respect we have for the boss,” said the England defender.

“We’ve been on a journey together and it’s never nice to see someone lose their job.

“For him to come in and speak to us, the emotion around the place, yeah, it was difficult.

“The players need to take responsibility for everything on and off the football field. We’re the ones that cross over the white line.

“We were in this together, the management and the players. Ultimately the manager has paid the price and we’re all so disappointed by that.

“In the last few months results have not been good enough and the players bear a huge responsibility for that.

“We know that individually and collectively.”
