Mikel Arteta previews Watford match

Arsenal have settled into a rhythm in recent weeks following a rocky start to the 2021-22 season.

The Gunners have the chance to go into the international break on a high too, as they face struggling Watford at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

Last time out the team produced a rounded performance at Leicester City, winning thanks to goals from Gabriel and Emile Smith Rowe, as well as an inspired display from Aaron Ramsdale between the sticks.

It means the mood is positive around north London, and with so many talented young players settling into life under Mikel Arteta, there’s no reason why excitement can’t continue to build for the Gunners.

Here is the latest on Arsenal ahead of the Watford clash, including positive injury news for the team.

Xhaka return date set

Arsenal are hopeful Granit Xhaka can return to full training in the new year.

The Swiss international suffered medial ligament damage in the team’s 3-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur in late September. The issue was expected to keep the 29-year-old out for around three months.

However, in the Gunners’ injury bulletin it is suggested Xhaka may be set for a little longer out of the team than anticipated as his expected date to return to full training is “early in the New Year.”

It’s added that “Granit is making good progress in the initial stages of his recovery.”

Saliba wants to fight for Gunners spot

According to The Telegraph , Saliba is ready to fight for his place at Arsenal next season after shining on loan with Marseille this term.

The France youth international was shipped out to the Ligue 1 outfit in the summer to ensure he earned regular minutes this season and he has been earning rave reviews after a string of commanding displays.

While Arsenal’s current partnership of Ben White and Gabriel is thriving, in Saliba the Gunners clearly have a hugely exciting prospect out on loan who looks increasingly determined to make an impact in the Premier League.

Smith Rowe ‘gutted’ by England snub

Arteta has admitted that the club’s young midfielder Emile Smith Rowe has been left “gutted” after he missed out on the recent England squad.

Smith Rowe has shone in recent weeks for Arsenal and has been at the heart of some of their slick attacking play.

Messi and Ronaldo’s time will soon end, but who is set to be their heir apparent?

England are blessed with talent aplenty in attacking midfield areas, with the likes of Jack Grealish, Mason Mount and Phil Foden all jostling for spots in the side.

Nevertheless, Arteta has said Smith Rowe is disappointed not to have made the cut.

“I think he should be happy If people are gutted or if they’re questioning the decision because it shows the level he’s playing at,” said the Arsenal boss.
