Mohamed Salah is fast approaching the final 18 months of his contract at Anfield and has been locked in a standoff with the club’s hierarchy for over a year; now, he is arguably the world’s best player, leading a fresh Premier League title charge
Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has warned his former club to do whatever it takes to tie Mohamed Salah down to a new contract.
While a host of Anfield stars have penned new deals in recent months, the club’s top goalscorer remains the odd man out.
Salah’s deal on Merseyside is fast approaching its final 18 months, and speculation has been allowed to mount over his long-term future.
That has not seemingly distracted the 29 year-old from a record-breaking start to the new campaign, with 12 goals in 11 appearances so far.
Salah admitted this week that, if it were upto him, he would sign a new deal that keeps him at Liverpool until the end of his career, putting the ball firmly back in the court of the Reds’ hierarchy.
The continued standoff comes at a time where Salah is – most notably by Kop boss Jurgen Klopp – being heralded as the world’s best player at present; a sentiment Souness, despite the frustrations “extremely selfish” Salah can bring to his teammates, agrees with.
“I agree with Jurgen Klopp that Mohamed Salah has been the best player in the world this season,” he wrote in his column for The Sunday Times .
“He is perhaps as greedy a player as I have seen. All the top names have an element of that but he is extremely selfish.
“Personal targets are important to him and he shoots from every possible angle, which frustrates his team-mates at times — especially Mane.
“The other players accept it because he is so good. When he doesn’t square it, he is either scoring or making goalkeepers work so that the follow-up is a tap-in for someone anyway, which makes it hard for anyone to criticise him.
“He may even take it as a compliment that I think he is the most selfish player I have seen because he is a goal machine.”
Despite the ‘selfish’ label, Salah has also provided four assists for teammates in the Premier League thus far, showcasing a decisive creative range to open up defences for others.
And Souness insists that, no matter the cost, Liverpools Egyptian King should be handed the new bumper contract he deserves.
“I won’t speculate on what he is asking for but Liverpool should give it to him,” he added.
“It is in their interests to pay him as much as they can afford and also for Salah to stay at the club where he has clearly had the best spell of his career.”
