The Barcelona central defender could not resist a social media jab at his club’s most fierce rivals after they failed to land their number one transfer target on deadline day
Barcelona icon Gerard Pique was quick to poke fun at rivals Real Madrid after they failed to secure the signature of French superstar Kylian Mbappe, Paris Saint-Germain rejecting a jaw-dropping €220m deadline day bid for the 22-year-old.
Regardless of the fact that Mbappe is within the final 12 months of his contract at the Ligue 1 outfit, PSG declined the offer despite knowing full well they could lose the World Cup winner for free next summer.
Mbappe has already rejected a number of contract extension offers from his current side, such is his desperation to leave the French capital to fulfil his boyhood dream of playing for Real Madrid.
Though the failure to secure him this summer is hardly a crisis for Los Blancos, they will have to make do without one of Europe’s most lethal marksmen as they aim to recover from a dismal showing last term.
This, in turn, sparked some taunts from Barca star Pique, who was actually poking fun at the Madrid-based media outlet Marca for getting too excited too soon.
Marca recently published a story discussing which number Mbappe could wear at Real Madrid before any deal had been agreed between the two clubs.
They have been left looking rather foolish, as Pique was quick to point out, as he posted a screenshot of the story’s headline accompanied with a caption that simply read: “The seven.”
This is of course in reference to the number Mbappe currently wears for PSG, Pique clearly taking pleasure in pointing out that Mbappe is going nowhere just yet.
Real Madrid’s pursuit of the striker has been one of the sagas of the summer, the Spanish giants initially submitting an offer of €160m for the PSG star before going up as far as €220m – with no success to show for it.
Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol revealed how Real Madrid are free to pen a pre-contractual agreement with Mbappe as early as January of next year.
Were PSG wrong to reject €220m for Mbappe? Have your say here.
Solhekol explained: “I have now been told that Real Madrid will sign him on a pre-contract agreement in January and he will join the club as a free agent.
“PSG could have had more than €220million today – I have been asked not to name the exact figure – but they have dragged their feet and been biding their time.
“Real Madrid then got cold feet as they thought they had tried their best and done everything by the book and was more than reasonable for a player out of contract next summer.”
