Gary Neville’s pre-match prediction comes back to haunt him as Liverpool hammer Man Utd – swiftheadline

Manchester United legend Gary Neville confidently predicted his former club would beat Liverpool on Sunday, stating it was a “fact”.

The Red Devils were humiliated 5-0 by Jurgen Klopp’s side at Old Trafford in one of the darkest days in the club’s recent history.

On the most recent edition of Monday Night Football, Sky Sports presenter Dave Jones asked Jamie Carragher if Cristiano Ronaldo would get in Liverpool’s team.

Carragher said no, leaving a shocked Neville to respond: “Obviously I disagree with it.”

Carragher then joked: “That’s the headline, isn’t it, for the weekend? He’s going to get the winner isn’t he?”

That prompted Neville to look into the camera and say: “You know that Manchester United are going to beat Liverpool on Sunday.

“And that is a fact. And he [Carragher] knows it, by the way.”

Unfortunately for Neville, the opposite happened. Goals from Naby Keita, Diogo Jota and a hat-trick from Mohamed Salah completed a remarkable victory for Liverpool.

Although Neville predicted a Red Devils victory, his old team-mate Paul Scholes thought they would be 4-0 down at half-time – and his worst fears came true.

Speaking after United’s 3-2 victory against Atalanta on Wednesday: “You celebrate every win, but the first half really worried me.

“People are going to say I’m miserable and I’ll maybe be slagged off by some United fans, but I looked at that game thinking about the Liverpool game.

“That first half United had two midfielders playing on their own and if they do that against Liverpool and [Manchester] City they’ll be four down by half-time.”

Legendary United boss Sir Alex Ferguson wasn’t impressed with the team’s embarrassing performance against Liverpool – and neither was Neville.

Speaking after the game, Neville said: “The pressure after this game is going to be intolerable in some quarters.

“The board have made everyone aware that they are steadfast in their support of the manager and that he stays. Results like this undermine that, there’s no doubt. This is sobering.

“Manchester United need to change. I believe Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is going to get the opportunity to change. But there is going to be pressure from every source.

“There’s no doubt the manager will get an absolute battering. There will be calls for his head like you wouldn’t believe but you wonder what this defeat will do to the players. How will they pick themselves up?

“There’s no hiding place after this. United are going to be absolutely demoralised. The next 24 hours is going to be as hot as it has ever been at this football club.”
