A Finnish man in his 70s in the Costa Blanca holiday town of Torrevieja was arrested on suspicion of killing his partner and chopping up her remains
A man in his 70s has been arrested on suspicion of murdering his partner and dumping her dismembered body in a bin outside a supermarket.
Detectives in the Costa Blanca holiday town of Torrevieja raced to the scene on Thursday after two legs and an arm were discovered in the waste dump outside a supermarket.
The grim discovery was made by a homeless person who had been looking for food.
The suspect – an expat from Finland – was arrested hours later after detectives checked CCTV footage of the area and identified the person they suspected had abandoned the human remains.
His home was subsequently searched and on Friday officers were trawling waste treatment plans for more evidence.
The murder victim has been described as a 68-year-old woman who is also from Finland and had been living with the suspect since February.
Local reports said the human limbs found in the large-size wheelie bin had been discovered by a homeless person looking for food.
More human remains were found in the arrested man’s home.
A spokesman for the Civil Guard in Alicante, confirming the arrest, said: “We have held the alleged author of a homicide in Torrevieja after the remains of the dismembered body of a woman were found inside a rubbish container.
“We received the alert around midday yesterday/on Thursday, saying parts of what appeared to be a human body had been found in the container near a supermarket.
“Officers confirmed they were three limbs that could be those of a woman shortly after.
“Detectives identified a possible suspect filmed on CCTV and arrested him in the street around 8.40pm last night/on Thursday night.
“A search of his home subsequently took place which went on into the early hours of the morning and more human remains were found.
“The Civil Guard is subsequently carrying out an exhaustive search of different transport points and waste residue plants in the province to try to collect more evidence that helps piece together everything that has happened here.”
The spokesman added: “The body appears to be that of the partner of the detainee, a Finnish woman aged 68 who had lived with the suspect since February of this year.
“The suspect is a Finnish man aged 70 who is facing a homicide charge.”
