Ed Sheeran says Robbie Williams helped him get back on track and still checks in on him

Ed Sheeran hopes to help upcoming solo music artists in the same way Robbie Williams helped him after the flame-haired star confessed he used to end up in dangerous situations

Ed Sheeran has admitted that stars such as Robbie Williams helped him change his life around.

The flame-haired singing sensation, 30, confessed that he used to get himself into some dangerous situations when on tour, but the former Take That icon was there to help him through the tough times.

Ed revealed that he found being a solo artist very “solitary” as it’s “just you” when you’re finished performing a gig.

While he said he didn’t want people to feel sorry for him, he described how going somewhere new often meant he would go clubbing alone as other tour crew members were older and married with kids so didn’t want the party lifestyle.

Ed says Robbie Williams still checks in on him

Speaking to The Sun, the Shape of You singer said: “I’ve made a lot of mistakes. I was literally going out on my own, not knowing anyone, walking into a bar, and seeing where the night took me.

“I ended up in situations which were pretty dangerous, and now I think there are so many times where things could have happened to me and I’m very grateful that they didn’t.”

He continued to say that fellow artists in the industry helped him get back on track and he is hopeful that he can help rising stars in the same way.

He explained how he feels a “real connection” with Robbie Williams after the Rock DJ singer reached out to him and said how solo artists “end up leaning on different things” as they don’t have a band alongside them.

“I’ve had long conversations with him about it, and he’s been very caring with me,” Ed said.

“He still checks up on me a lot. And now I’m trying to do that for the generation below me because I came to really appreciate it.”

Ed, whose hotly anticipated Equals album is out today, said he feels his latest work is his quarter-life crisis.

He revealed how creating the album made him grow up and feel like an adult as it touches on the birth of his first child as well as the death of his pal and tour promoter Michael Gudinski.

Ed says his latest album made him ‘grow up’

Ed and partner Cherry welcomed baby Lyra in August 2020 and the superstar admits that he’d love to have more children.

Speaking to the Open House podcast in June, Ed said: “I would obviously be super grateful to be able to have any more kids, but I think girls are far superior to boys. As a boy myself, I feel like I can say this.

“I feel like we were so lucky to be able to have one that I think I would obviously love more. But I think we’re so lucky to just have one. So if nothing else happens, I’m so happy, basically.”
