‘Dune’ Opens To $40M In Theaters; Tops ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ On HBO Max

Dune opened to an impressive $40 million in theaters and scored more viewers than Zack Snyder’s Justice League on HBO Max.

The reviews for Dune have been extremely positive with some calling the film a masterpiece. However, given the film’s reported price tag of $165 million and the state of the COVID-19 pandemic, part two isn’t a guarantee.

‘Dune’ Director Hopeful For Sequel If Box Office Returns Are Decent

According to Variety, Dune opened well domestically in theaters with $40.1 million. To date, the sci-fi epic has earned $220 million worldwide.

Dune was also available to HBO Max subscribers over the weekend and Samba TV data says the film grabbed 1.9 million viewers from Thursday to Sunday. This figure puts its HBO Max debut ahead of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which had 1.8 million viewers.

Compared to the opening of other HBO Max films this year, Dune‘s Thursday-Sunday numbers are behind The Suicide Squad‘s 2.8 million viewers, while Mortal Kombat is on top for Friday-Sunday totals with an impressive 3.8 million.

Set in the distant future, Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides whose family accepts control of the desert planet Arrakis. As the only producer of a highly valuable resource, control of Arrakis is highly contested among the noble families. After Paul and his family are betrayed, the story explores themes of politics, religion, and man’s relationship to nature as Paul leads a rebellion to restore his family’s control of Arrakis.

Denis Villeneuve directed Dune from a script he co-wrote with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts. The film stars Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgard, Charlotte Rampling, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem, and David Dastmalchian.
