Cleo Smith: Missing 4-year-old is found ‘alive and well’

The relieved mum of a four-year-old girl who was found after a frantic hunt by police has spoken out for the first time and sent an emotional text message to friends.

The family of Cleo Smith had feared the worst after the girl went missing from a site in Carnarvon, north of Perth, on October 16.

After a frantic search officers found her safe and well after they broke into a home and found her inside one of the rooms.

Officers later said a man had been taken into custody following the 1am raid, having previously said they thought Cleo had been abducted.

Following the good news that Cleo had been found safely her mum Ellie Smith took to social media to share her relief.

“Our family is whole again” she wrote on her Instagram page, next to a single heart emoji.

Her words attracted responses from many well-wishers following a case that had captivated the nation.

One wrote: “Gave me goosebumps!! So happy for you guys and Cleo.”

Another said: “The whole of Australia in tears driving to work this morning. Awesome news to hear. So happy you’ve been reunited.”

A third commenter wrote: “I think a lot of people are crying with relief for you this morning! Can’t imagine how you must be feeling. So so happy for you.”

A close family friend also revealed an emotional message that Ellie wrote to her loved ones letting them know her ‘beautiful girl is home’.

“To be woken at 4.50am with my phone going crazy at 4.50am and see the words Cleo is home alive and safe,” she said on Facebook.

“Seeing Ellie saying her “beautiful girl is home” is nothing short of a miracle. We are so happy for her to be home.”

Announcing the discovery earlier deputy commissioner Col Blanch said: “It’s my privilege to announce that in the early hours of this morning, the Western Australia police force rescued Cleo Smith. Cleo is alive and well.

“One of the officers picked her up into his arms and asked her, ‘What’s your name?’ She said, ‘My name is Cleo.’”

A short time later police were able to reunite Cleo with her family.

The home where Cleo Smith was found is just a seven minute drive away from Cleo Smith’s parents home in Carnarvon



The toddler’s mum said that her daughter and her sleeping bag were missing from the family tent when the family awoke at around 6am.

Her younger sister was asleep in a cot next to her, while her mum was in a second room in the large tent at the site on Australia’s Coral Coast.

The deputy commissioner said: “This is the outcome we all hoped and prayed for.”

He said that “incredible police work” had led to Cleo’s rescue and that the force would have “more to say” in the coming days.

In an emotional statement, New South Wales commissioner Mick Fuller said his Western Australia counterpart Chris Dawson had broken down in tears at the news.

Mr Fuller said he thought the chances of Cleo being found alive were “so slim”.

He added: “West Australian Police never gave up on Cleo, it was good old-fashioned police work that resulted in her being found alive.”

No further details about the suspect have yet been released.
