Billy Porter Arrives On The Red Carpet

Billy Porter has extended an olive brand to Harry Styles after previously lashing out at him for wearing a dress on the cover of Vogue magazine.

The 52-year-old American actor took issue with 27-year-old singer Harry when he featured on the cover of the December 2020 issue of the US magazine while wearing a dress.

Billy famously wears dresses himself – frequently turning heads on red carpets by donning extravagant frocks while appearing at A List events.

However, Billy has now taken a step back from his argument to highlight he was angry with the Vogue editors’ decision to put Harry on the cover of the magazine in a dress, rather than the star himself.

Billy Porter apologised for slamming Harry Styles

He said while appearing on Late Night With Stephen Colbert: “The first thing I wanna say is, Harry Styles, I apologize to you for having your name in my mouth. It’s not about you. The conversation is not about you.”

Show host Stephen then added: “For the people who don’t know, Harry Styles was the first man to appear on the cover of Vogue —“

With Billy then cutting in to finish the sentence, saying: “In a dress.”

Clarifying his stance, Billy went on: “And so the conversation is actually deeper than that. It is about the systems of oppression and erasure of people of colour who contribute to the culture.”

He continued: “Now that’s a lot to unpack. I’m willing to unpack it sans the dragging and cancel culture of the internet because I do not now nor will not ever adjudicate my life or humanity in sound bites on social media.

“So when you are ready to have the real conversation, call a b*tch.”

Fanning himself, he went on: “I’m ready to have it and I’m sorry, Harry. I didn’t mean no harm. I’m a gay man, We like Harry, he’s cute.”

Billy previously explained his decision to hit out at Harry.

He told The Times: “I created the conversation [about non-binary fashion] and yet Vogue still put Harry Styles, a straight white man, in a dress on their cover for the first time.

“I’m not dragging Harry Styles, but he is the one you’re going to try and use to represent this new conversation? He doesn’t care, he’s just doing it because it’s the thing to do.

Billy usually wears a dress himself while attending red carpet events

“This is politics for me. This is my life. I had to fight my entire life to get to the place where I could wear a dress to the Oscars and not be gunned now. All he has to do is be white and straight.”

Speaking about wearing a dress himself, Harry told Vogue: “I think if you get something that you feel amazing in, it’s like a superhero outfit.

“Clothes are there to have fun with and experiment with and play with… What’s really exciting is that all of these lines are just kind of crumbling away.”
