Arteta reveals White’s Arsenal move was long time in making

Arsenal have been warned they could lose new signing Ben White to a “massive foreign club” if they are not able to return to the higher reaches of the Premier League.

The Gunners sealed a £50million move for the Brighton defender last week, following a summer long pursuit of the 23-year-old.

White was Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta’s top target for the summer window as the Spaniard seeks to improve on a disappointing eighth-place finish in the top-flight last season.

The lowly position means that the Gunners also failed to secure European football for the upcoming campaign, which could put them at a disadvantage when trying to attract star names.

Ben White finally sealed his £50million move to Arsenal last week

Arteta has already seen Nuno Tavares and Albert Sambi Lokonga arrive at the Emirates Stadium, though White is their first statement signing of the window.

The London club will hope that the addition of White can help drive them back up the table, having not participated in the Champions League since the 2016/2017 season.

Former Gunners hero Perry Groves is certainly excited about the signing of White and believes it signals a change in transfer strategy.

“I thought it was a statement of intent,” Groves told talkSPORT.

“I think maybe there’s a few clubs – Arsenal being one included – where the owners are spending money now, where maybe they wouldn’t have spent it before we had the Super League debacle.

“I think there’s a few clubs who are obviously trying to get the fans back in favour.”

White first played at the Emirates Stadium in an FA Cup third round game in January 2020, which Groves was present for.

Though the centre-back was on the losing side that day, the former winger left the game impressed by the now-England international.

Perry Groves is excited by the signing of White but believes Arsenal must improve to avoid losing him in a few seasons’ time

“I saw [Ben White] at the Emirates for Leeds in the FA Cup. It didn’t faze him,” Groves added.

“It was 60,000, they had 9,000 Leeds fans there creating a brilliant atmosphere. That was a big game and he just breezed through it.

“He breezed through it tactically, he breezed through it positionally, he breezed through it technically, on the ball. He was very, very good, very comfortable, very composed.”

While Groves is excited about what White can bring to Arteta’s side, he did caution his former club that he could soon depart if the Gunners are unable to improve.

He tipped a “massive foreign club” to come in for White, if he impresses at the heart of Arsenal’s defence over the next few years.

“I actually think he has the potential to be as good as, if not better than, John Stones and Harry Maguire in a couple of seasons,” Groves said.

“Not straight away, in a couple of seasons time. If Arsenal aren’t a top club, then he could go on to a massive foreign club.”

White has signed a long-term contract with the Gunners, which Arteta will hope means that Groves’ prediction does not turn out to come true.
